Criminals are possibly the most stupid people on the planet. Short of causing a death or harming a child, or causing physical harm of any kind, some of them are just plain funny, even having whole television shows made about their stupidity from time to time. However it takes a special kind of stupid to accomplish what transpired in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Marijuana is available to people through medical prescription from a doctor in the state of Colorado. In fact, there are special places that are licensed by Colorado lawmakers for the handling of these prescriptions, separate from a regular pharmacy. In addition you have to have a really good reason backed by your doctor to even get your hands on that prescription.
Here’s where that “special kind of stupid’ I mentioned before comes into play. As I was paging the local newspaper I came across an article title that read “Three soldiers arrested after they get trapped inside a colo. Springs medical marijuana shop.” Special kind of stupid indeed. The article reported that these three men forced their way in to the shop in the early AM hours and when they got in the door closed behind them and the locking mechanism engaged behind them trapping them in. they weren’t able to take anything as the product and money were locked away in a safe…but they wouldn’t have gotten far anyway. When they spotted the officers outside they could be seen on the camera running around like rats in a maze trying to get out and flee. Police were able to apprehend them, who interestingly were called to the area by a bar disturbance, and they just happened to spot these people in the shop. They are now sitting in county jail with a bail of $10,000.
Here’s the worst part of this: records indicate that these three people, were not just your every day burglar fare. These people turned out to be in the military. Not only in the military but also on active duty stationed at Fort Carson! So not only did these men try to steal pot for their own uses, but they used military training they received to do it!
My question is…Why? These three people are military. They took an oath to protect this country, not add to its crime rate. They are supposed to answer to a higher moral then even your average citizen answers too. My understanding, in fact, is that they have to follow both the laws of the land and the military’s own set of laws as well!
What puts in the mind of group of people like this who, for some young ones, are role models, that its OK to perform a heinous act such as this? Can you imagine what children who look up to those in the military are potentially learning from this? Are they getting it in their heads now that its ok to steal because they heard that people in the military do it too? It seems to me that this will further add to the degradation of the standards that today’s youth holds to these days. Do we really need to have the morals of our youth, who are our future, warped more then they already are?
This is a shameful act, deserving of major jail time. Jail time first imposed by the military justices, and then after their (what should be) dishonorable discharge from the military, a sentence from the local judges in addition to that of the military. Call me harsh, but these people have dishonored the military, the country and the people they were supposed to be protecting, AND they broke the local laws. They should receive two consecutive punishments for this.
You just don’t put yourself in the position like you gain entering into the military and then pull a stunt like that. You just don’t. This is not the kind of person, or people, that I want ‘protecting’ me. They should have known better and something in their head should have said “hey, we’re supposed to be better then this, we best not go through with it” and walked away. Now they have basically ruined their lives and their careers, both in the military and outside of it.
