This article is about the unhealthiest Mexican foods. I have found researching these articles on unhealthy foods from various countries extremely interesting. I do remember reading that one reason that tasty foods from various countries was high in calories and fat was that they were made from foods that poor people had access to. These unhealthy foods from Mexico do not always count the fact that some of the fast food spots are even worse.
The majority of calories in Mexican food come from beans, corns and meat. This is a “fusion of Spanish and South American foods as a result of the way food was introduced by the Spanish invaders to South America in the 15th Century.
Some of the most calorie-laden foods under the category of “Mexican” include tortilla chips and salsa at 515 calories. Of course the fact that tortilla chips are deep-fat cooked would have a lot to do with that problem. However another problem would be the fact that we just keep eating and eating these chips.
A quesadilla runs 650 calories. That is an average “look.” After all, a quesadilla is made up of a shell and some type of “innards.” I like chicken quesadillas and they have cheese and chicken but even so with the cheese they carry the calories. The think about it is I can easily eat about four of these things.
Potato skins with sour cream run 565 calories. Once again these are eaten often as appetizers so downing three would not be a problem for a fast 1,695 calories, before the meal. Remember there is cheese and sour cream often along with some bacon bits.
A vegetable fajita sounds healthy but runs 810calories. And, that is without the sour cream. You have that deep fried wrap and if you use beef instead of the veggies your calorie count jumps to 1,300. And, in both cases the calorie count is for just one. I eat 2.5 per meal.
Chicken burrito runs 600 calories. While there are some damaging foods such as heavy cheese, the real damage is in the fact that you will eat more than one, sometimes many more than one.
Tortilla chips and guacamole is just like tortilla chips and salsa except your average charge is 590 calories instead of 515 calories.”
There are three major problems with Mexican food that makes it uniquely unhealthy. First it is a “social food.” It is easy to have a beer with some pals and down a bag of tortilla chips and “whatever.” Next the helpings or items are very small so food is “calorie-intense.” Finally it tastes great.
Yes, it can be unhealthy but take it from me it is hard to avoid.
