I just had to write about this movie. “Sometimes in April” takes place in Rwanda. Rwanda is a small country in Africa. In 1994 nearly one million people in this small country were killed off by their own countrymen. For one hundred terrible days, people were murdered because they were different. It was not the color of their skin or their race which caused all these murders to take place. It was because they were in or linked to the wrong tribe or group of people.
The movie was based on one man’s life. His wife, two sons, and daughter were all murdered. Most of them were murdered in the month of April. Ten years after the atrocity, he was still suffering from the pain of their terrible deaths. The man tells us the terrible story of needless murders in his country. He tells us about the loss he suffered through. Most importantly, he teaches us prejudice is a disease which can destroy a nation.
I learned a lesson from this movie. I am a white male who is forty years old. I grew up in Philadelphia, PA and I was treated awful because I was white. I was chased up and down the streets of the city, threatened, and beat up. This movie taught me something new about my past experiences.
It does not matter what color or race I am. There will always be somebody out there who will not like me. Not because I am a white male. I could be blind, handicapped, or different in any other way. Because of our differences, there are people who will not like you.
In my opinion, prejudice is color blind. People hate because people hate. If we were all blind, somebody would find some reason to not like another person.
In the case of this movie, people killed other people because they did not like them. Nearly a million people were killed (including women and children) because of hate and prejudice. I hope each of you watch this movie. Not because it will entertain you. Because it will show you what can happen if we hate other people.
If you are a parent, this movie is not for your children. It would teach them a lesson, but it is too violent for them to watch.
It is amazing to me how so many people (over the history of our world) have been murdered for no good reason. Today, terrorists are killing people because they are different. They hate people because they are different. In our country, we still have so much prejudice and hate. I hope and I pray we can all learn to accept each other for the people we are. Movies like this movie are sad, but if we learn from it, it can change our lives for the better. “Sometimes in April” tells the story about prejudice better than I could ever tell it myself.
