In “South Park” Season 14 Episode 11 “Coon 2: Hindsight,” we examine the fantasy world of children, the megalomania of one particular child, and how adults deal with catastrophes like the BP oil leak disaster.
So how did the guys do this time? Spoilers follow.
Eric Cartman reprises one of his roles as the Coon, a strange, ornery super hero who fights evil everywhere. The Coon has his own Justice League, dubbed “Coon and Friends,” much to the annoyance of some of the members who want it to be more than just stroking Cartman’s considerable ego. Oh, and tormenting Butters aka Professor Chaos, locked in a cage with his own feces.
At a high rise fire, an even stranger super hero is introduced, one Captain Hindsight, a fellow whose super power seems to be the ability to ascertain how a catastrophe could have been prevented after the fact. The Coon finds that this stealing of his limelight is intolerable. So he dressed Butters up like a floozy, gets Hindsight drunk, and takes embarrassing photos.
In the meantime, the mad cap guys at BP are at it again, blowing up yet another well and flooding the Gulf Coast, still reeling from the last time, with thick, oily goo. Captain Hindsight is able to describe what should have been done, but as usual it is too late.
In the meantime, Tony Hayward is brought back to cut a series of apology videos, all tastefully done against soft, reassuring but increasingly ludicrous backgrounds. I rather liked the one with Hayward naked on the bearskin rug.
The other thing that BP tried to do is rebrand itself by changing its name to “DP.” It only works for just a little while.
The final thing that DP does is try to drill a well into an alternate dimension. But quicker than one can say “Stephen King’s ‘The Fog,'” this lets loose an alarming group of monsters that destroy, devour, and demolish everything and everyone in their path.
DP decides to try to fix things by drilling on the surface of the Moon, where there seems to be a dead killer whale (I think from a previous episode).
This results in the unleashing of Cthulhu, the ultimate evil who will bring about 3,000 years of darkness as everyone left alive is driven mad and made to worship him.
Can Coon and Friends band together to defeat Cthulhu? One suspects that we shall find out next week.
