South Park Snooki jokes soon took over their Jersey Shore spoof. But the South Park Snooki parody had to be particularly outrageous since Snooki is the symbol of Jersey Shore. There are many inexplicably popular reality TV icons from New Jersey, and all of them were slammed last night by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. But when it came time to focus on the Jersey Shore, they saved the biggest slam for their main icon. Although the characterization may be overboard, Snooki’s critics might not think it was that far off.
Warning: Spoilers follow.
The beginning of “It’s A Jersey Thing” focused on spoofs of The Real Housewives, the term “muff cabbage” and Kyle’s discovery of his Jersey roots. However, the show didn’t parody any specific Jersey Shore figures until halfway through.
The show’s Snooki version was discovered at a Sizzler, as the town was already preparing for a Jersey invasion. But Snooki had already gotten there – in all of her orange, troll-like, smush-obsessed infamy.
Their Snooki was less of a human than a science fiction beast – which even made Osama bin Laden take action to stop the Jersey invasion and made Kyle actually save Cartman. Despite satirizing endless Jersey stereotypes – or at least Jersey reality TV stereotypes – this parody may be the most infamous of the episode.
Turning Snooki into a troll who can only say smush may seem unfair. But the show has done much worse to many more celebrities in the last 14 years. By now, the only surprise might have been if they didn’t turn her into a smush-crazed monster.
The rest of the Jersey Shore individuals largely escaped ridicule, except for a third act cameo by The Situation. Yet The Situation has been all over TV for the last several weeks, and is the biggest non-Snooki icon on the show, so South Park had to single him out too.
But the most outrageous gags were against Jersey Shore’s biggest star by the end. The Snooki caricature could play well with some of her housemates, depending on how many of them are fighting her on a given week. Angelina and The Situation are probably more inclined to laugh about it now, given the last few weeks of Jersey Shore Season 2.
However, the parody actually played well with it’s target too, as the real, human Snooki quoted her cartoon self on Twitter. She stated that “we’ve officially made it” which is a dead on statement.
It wasn’t enough for her to embody the Jersey reality TV genre- for better and for worse – but now the South Park Snooki troll has officially put her into pop culture history. Of course, Stone and Parker might now be disappointed that she actually liked the joke.
