With Halloween here, you might be looking for a good scare in the southern Illinois area. If you happen to be around Marion, Illinois, be sure to check out Fear…The Haunted House inside the Illinois Centre Mall. I had the chance to take a tour then actually go through this haunt and enjoyed the heck out of it.
Fear…The Haunted House was created and put together by local residents Jim and Jackie Fishback and a host of other volunteers and helpers. Tickets for this haunt are $8 per person and a portion of the proceeds will go to a local children’s charity–the Night’s Shield home in West Frankfort, Illinois.
The entrance for Fear…The Haunted House is located at the north east entrance doors in the mall–near ManTraCon. The house are 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights during the month of October. The mall closes at 9 p.m. but the entrance doors near the haunt remain open after hours for brave visitors.
Fear…The Haunted House is a maze of creepy sets and rooms that are designed to spook and scare. There are plenty of dark pathways and actors who will jump out for a scare along the way. While I personally wasn’t scared (it takes a lot to scare me), this was a fun haunted house to walk through and I will be returning with my kids.
I will give kudos to the actors and staff–in certain scenes, the actors followed me around and invaded my personal space just enough to be creepy and a little unnerving. This was especially so in one room that was full of creepy clowns. Let me just say I don’t like clowns–especially creepy ones and upon entering this room, I was surrounded by creepy clowns. I was happy to leave that room and while I giggled in most of the rooms, the clown room had elicited nervous giggles.
In the “toxic room,” there were actors in my peripheral vision and following me as I trekked through–it was enough to be creepy and plenty of fun. Upon first entering the maze, upon reaching the second room scene, I realized that there was a voice whispering my name over the speakers, and that continued which was a very nice touch and served to make me giggle but also feel just a little unnerved–which was a perfect effect for the haunt.
