Monopoly is one of the most popular board games in the world. Just because it is good, doesn’t mean you can’t make it better. Here are some suggestions to improve the gameplay:
Playing the game online makes the roles of auctions a bit easier and more fair, since the timing of “going, going, sold” is automatic. However, an interesting way is to have each player write down a price on a piece of paper and a designated player collects them and determines the highest bidder. This way, properties will be bought faster and the game will progress faster.
A common rumor is the the utilities are a waste of money and that they should be past up. A solution is that utilities are turned into other railroads. This would make the railroads more valuable later in the game and make it worth the early investment.
In the later stages of the game, there is a cheap strategy to prolong the time in jail while the other players brave your hotel laden rows and profit from it. You can prevent this type of foolish behavior by implementing a rule change that if the property owner is in jail, there is no rent due.
There are several ways to play the game with Free Parking. In the rules, it is just a free space and a haven that you don’t have to pay anything. On the other hand, you can have it set at a certain amount, say $500, that is refilled by the bank when someone lands on it. You can also set it so that every time someone pays taxes, it goes there.
Using Real Money
The interesting part of this is that you don’t need to have two thousand dollars on you to pay the rent for landing on Boardwalk that has a hotel on it. To set it up, just divide each price by 100. $400 in monopoly, $4 real cash. Have each player supply there own starting money and a fair portion of the bank. You could possibly make a wager and gamble a bit.
To free up some properties later in the game, the bank buys back the property for a reduced amount when the player mortgages it. This is instead of the player keeping the property. A maneuver of this type will allow those that have plenty of cash, but not enough properties to buy the mortgaged property. It is a sort of foreclosure.
Buy 2, Get the Third
When a single player ends up buying two out of the three properties in a set, he can buy the third one immediately for double the listed price. This is a solution of having sets mingled between players with no possible hotels. It will also speed up the game in the sense that properties are being bought up and cash is depleting from the game.
Hope you try few of these ideas the next time you play monopoly with your friends and family. Comments about your favorite variations are welcomed.
