We have been waiting for years for Star Craft II to come out. The entire country of South Korea has been waiting for the release. After all that time is Star Craft II: Wings of Liberty really worth the wait? Well after 12 years I suppose you can wait for the answer a few more paragraphs.
The first Star Craft game was released 12 years ago and it has had a large following all that time. Most good games get a few things right but Star Craft got everything right. With an entire country ready to make Star Craft the national sport Star Craft II had some large shoes to fill. But Blizzard is known for taking its time to make games and for spending that time well and making the best game possible. If any publisher can make Star Craft II as good as the hype then Blizzard can.
For Star Craft II to live up to the hype it would need to be more then just an update of an already great game. Star Craft II has done a good job of not only keeping everything that is good about Star Craft but also improves on the original. Having been over a decade in the making the graphics and sound have improved considerably. Graphics alone do not make a good game. What is really going to make Star Craft II a great game is great gameplay.
Lots of sequels focus on adding more to previous games but Star Craft II does not need to get gimmicky by adding in more playable races. The races are well balanced already and let players choose which strategy is best for them. Star Craft II looked at what made Star Craft so popular and focused on that.
When Blizzard made Star Craft they did not know that the thing most people liked would be the online multi-player ability. Now that Blizzard knows this is why the game is so popular they decided not to focus on the single player story. A single player story is still in the game but not as big an aspect of the game. Blizzard focused on the multi-player aspect of the game over the single player aspect.
Battle.net has received some major changes and improvements. Battle.net has a new ladder system that puts players of equal ability against each other. When starting out this can be less then accurate because two new players who have few games played may match up with a Korean pro who has few games since the game is new but is a Star Craft expert anyway. The ladder issues should be fixed soon and the more you play the more accurate the computer gets at making fair games.
The ability to record and replay games is being improved so you no longer have to tell about the time you did something epic. You can now show your friends how epic it truly was. Blizzard took advice from fans and gave gamers the game they wanted.
There are some small but nice improvements like on the fly cut scene tech that will likely be making it into more games in the future. Some nice terrain changes and effects are in the game as well. While these little advances are nice they do not really enhance the gameplay.
Star Craft II Brought back some old favorite units but also brought out some new units. Blizzard did an amazing job again in balancing everything out. They did the best possible job in how they handled the units. They even put the units they designed but took out of the game and included them in the map generator. The map generator follows another tradition of Blizzard offering great map generators which the fans then use to make some amazing maps and new games. The newest map generator should give us lots of great new maps. In fact Blizzard is going to be making truly epic maps available for sale but to be good enough to be sold is going to be hard. There are going to be players out there trying to be the first to make a map good enough to be included for sale.
While this all might sound great there are a couple problems with Star Craft II. The largest problem is that it has been overheating video cards. They have made a temporary workaround for the problem. While this may sound really bad and it is you have to admit a game that is so powerful that your computer can not handle it is impressive. They should have raised the specs for the game. The other problem is while it is an amazing game it is hard to decide whether the game is worth all the time and all the hype that went into making the game.
While it may or may not be worth the wait Star Craft II is certainly an amazing game.
