This StarCraft 2 unit guide will cover the Terran Refinery building. The Refinery is the Terran player’s sole source of vespene gas extraction in StarCraft 2, being a needed resource for constructing most units except the most basic. Refineries harvest the raw gas from vespene geysers, packaging it into a container form that can easily be taken back to a Command Center by an SCV. Gas is collected 4 at a time, and new to StarCraft 2, Refineries no longer produce gas once depleted, whereas in the original StarCraft they would continue to produce 2.
The Refinery is first used in the StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty campaign mission ‘The Outlaws’

StarCraft 2 Terran Refinery Upgrades
Building Armor (melee only): Researched by the Engineering Bay (Hotkey B) this upgrade gives +2 armor to all Terran buildings, including the Refinery (3 Total). Excellent upgrade to help increase the longevity of your buildings. Costs 150 minerals, 150 gas and 140 seconds.
Fire Suppression System (Campaign Only): Costs $90,000 to benefit all structures including the Refinery by causing all fires to automatically be put out while buildings automatically repair themselves to 50%. Fires can be a real killer to Terran structures, often destroying them as they continue burning after an attack has subsided. The automatic repair function also helps until an SCV can arrive.
Micro Filtering: This upgrade requires 10 research points into the Protoss tech tree, and allows Refineries to harvest vespene gas 25% faster. Choosing this upgrade will lock the ability to choose Orbital Depots.
Automated Refinery: This upgrade requires 15 research points into the Protoss tech tree and makes all Refineries built as the Automated Refinery, which harvests vespene gas without the need of SCVs. Choosing this upgrade means you can no longer get the Reactor Command Center upgrade.
