Everything moves a million miles an hour. Everyone is always in a rush. The moments in our life our flying past us and we’re not even paying any attention to them! So how do we change all of this? Here are some simple steps on how to slow down and de-stress.
1) Breathe! Excess amounts of carbon dioxide in your body can cause you to tense up, bottling up your anxiety and stress. What I like to do is find a comfortable position and just breathe. Don’t count how long I’m holding my breath or how many breaths I’m taking. Just breathe for about five minutes. Pay attention to your breathe. Now count. Breathe in for five seconds, hold for five seconds, and breathe out for eight seconds. Be careful! You may get a little light headed at first, but your body will get used to it.
2) Turn off. Sit in silence. Turn off the radio, the television, the phone, the computer, put away the magazines and yes, even the books. As hard as it may sound, make time to just sit and let your mind flow. If you must, start out with setting aside ten minutes a week, and gradually make more time until you can give yourself at least ten minutes a day to do absolutely nothing.
3) Write. When you’re feeling stressed write. Free-write for about five to ten minutes, about all of the things that are worrying and stressing you. Then, throw it away. Symbolically, you’re throwing away all of your worries and all of your stress.
4) List. List everything that you love, everything that makes you feel happy. Focus on those things, and I promise you’ll start feeling better right away.
These things will not only help you to slow down and feel what it’s like to live, but they will help you be happier!
