Right on the heels of Glenn Beck’s rally on the National Mall to restore honor, the internet started brewing with petitions to get Stephen Colbert to hold a Restoring Truthiness rally. Less than a month later, the internet has succeeded again, with the announcement of a two for one rally on the Mall on October 30.
The pair announced the rallies on Thursday night and by Friday, more than 65,000 Facebook users were confirmed to be attending the event. On his show, Jon Stewart said his “Rally to Restore Sanity” brings a message of reason and respectful disagreement – a way to “take it down a notch for America.” The rally is an answer to all the insane extremists, and a place for the moderates to have a little fun.
In retaliation, Stephen Colbert is bringing his ultra conservative persona to an opposing rally called the “March to Keep Fear Alive” because, according to the rally’s webpage: “America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear – that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty.” According to Colbert, “Now is not the time to take it down a notch. Now is the time to freak out for freedom.”
It is unclear what the schedule of events will include though the rally is tentatively taking place from 8 AM to 5 PM. Jon Stewart hinted that there might be some special guests though, which in all likelihood will include other correspondents of the fake news shows, which will be filming in DC around that time.
According to the permit application given to the National Park Service, organizers are expecting 25,000 people, which is a tiny fraction of the crowd that Glenn Beck brought to the District, but still a sizable number. The proposed location is just north of the Washington Monument and is sure to bring a lot of traffic to DC.
If you were unfortunate enough to try to use the Metro when Glenn Beck was in town, you already know what you’re in for. In case you missed it, expect massive delays and packed trains in all the downtown Metro stations, particularly those around the National Mall.
It looks like for now, we’re just going to have to stay tuned for more surprises from the duo. In the meantime, get your calendars marked and your accommodations in order for the million moderate march.
