One of the most brilliant minds in scientific research, Professor Stephen Hawking, has changed his stance on the matter of God. In 1988, Hawking wrote the world renowned book “A Brief History of Time” in which he referred to the idea that creation stemmed from God with the quote, “If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God.”
In Stephen Hawking’s next novel, slated for publishing in the U.S. on September 7th, he has changed his stance on knowing “the mind of God” to saying no God is needed for creation at all. According to Hawking’s own words from The Grand Design (Hawking’s New Book) printed in the Times, “Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.”
Hawking does not say there is no God nor does he tell us about his own religious views which have been questioned over the years. All he states is that “God” is not necessary for creation. No God needed. Creation will happen with or without the help of an omniscient being. According to the world’s leading theoretical physicist, his views changed because of a planet being found in 1992 which orbited a star just like the Earth orbits the sun. Hawking claims it is unremarkable “and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings.”
The excerpt placed in the Times of London follows on the heels of Hawking’s interview with Big Think where he warned the human race about their impending destruction unless we colonize space to save the species. According to Hawking, our destruction as the human race will happen within the next 2 centuries (200 years) due to overpopulation, the possibility of nuclear war, and depletion of natural resources.
But even if we don’t manage to make ourselves extinct in the next few centuries, other scientists have predicted the sun will destroy the Earth and everything on it when it dies in the next 5 billion years or when a nearby star system goes “super nova” in the next 10 million years and nukes us all. And thoses are just the scientific ways the human species can die out. The religious ways include the Apocalypse, Armageddon, the Qiyamah, The Final Judgment, the end of The Cycle, Kalpa, and any other End Time or End of Times scenario.
It seems the human race is facing extinction any way you look at it and the only possibility for the survival of the species is to colonize space. Hawking is right about that. However, there may be many who oppose his theory that no God is needed for creation.
Hawking’s new novel, The Grand Design, is co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow and will be available in the U.S. after September 7th and in the UK after September 9th.
