For many years, Halloween was about the street party in the Castro. In years past, I remember when the streets were so crowded that it took me 20 minutes to walk from one end of the street to other. The streets were packed with people. The Castro was loud and it was crazy. In the past few years, there has been little of this revelry. I don’t think things will ever return to what it was after the violence in 2006, but I am still adjusting.
This year, I am not looking forward to Halloween as in years past. I understand that times have changed and the police will be out. The Castro will no longer be closed down for a street party. It has just not been the same. It is going to take some effort to establish another tradition for Halloween. I will still go to the Castro, but like many people I am emotionally adjusting.
