Now I have to go on record that I agree that in The United States of America we possess the first amendment right to free speech.
To quote from wikipedia, “Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and by many state constitutions and state and federal laws. Criticism of the government and advocacy of unpopular ideas that people may find distasteful or against public policy, such as racism, sexism, and other hate speech are generally permitted…”
I guess you have the right to burn “Old Glory” in protest to Vienna Sausages being too short in length, or whatever else. But to burn the flag is unacceptable behavior. It is crass. You have a right to protest at the funeral of our fallen hero soldiers. But your behavior is repulsive and despicable to say the least. I believe you may have a right to lie about whatever you want including that you are a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. But a right or not, you are still a liar.
Let’s go to California. Xavier Alvarez is from Pomona and a local official of the water board there. In 2007 he was indicted after saying in a campaign message that he was a Marine. Claiming that he was a retired Marine and a recipient of the highest award for our heroes, The Congressional Medal of Honor.
After an investigation, it was revealed that Alvarez never served in the military. He lied for personal gain.
Alvarez was indicted and he later pleaded guilty as being in violation of the law – the Stolen Valor Act. He has pleaded the first amendment. In August of this year, a three-judge panel has ruled in his favor. Sad but true.
Alvarez, you may have the right but you are nothing more than a liar and a thief. I hope you will eventually be prosecuted for fraud and malfeasance. You deserve it along with all the others who have tried to capitalize on our Hero of Heroes. You are insulting to the men and women who have served this country in the military and especially to those who are true Medal of Honor recipients. I sincerely pray to God for your soul and for the souls of people such as you.
The Stolen Valor Act violates free speech? Perhaps, but I don’t totally agree. We will see what the end result will be.
