Now that fall is nearing and lawn season has come to an end it is time to think about winterizing and storing the lawn mower. This should be done at the close of every mowing season and is critical for mower care. Some areas have different seasons and for this reason in some areas it turns cold for a couple of months and grass is not necessary to cut.
Here are some things that should be done prior to storing any lawn mower:
Number 1: Before storing a lawn mower make sure that all of the gas is drained or exhausted by running the mower dry. Gas that sits over winter can turn to varnish and hurt the carburetor when it is run through. This can cause problems at start up. Clean gas at start up is always recommended.
This will keep the mower happy and healthy.
Number 2: Drain the oil before storing the mower as well. This will keep the oil from turning to sludge. Remember keeping the engine happy is a job well done.
Number 3: Remove the blade for sharpening if necessary. This way before the lawn mower goes into storage it will be ready when it comes out. Staying one step ahead will be appreciated in the spring.
Cutting grass is hard enough without having to work on the mower in the springtime. Thinking ahead will save one a headache in the future.
Number 4: Degrease the lawn mower before storing and clean underneath as well. This gives one the opportunity to inspect the condition of the mower and see if any thing else needs to be done prior to storage.
Degreasing can be done with an engine degreaser from an automotive store or regular dish washing liquid, a stiff brush and water. Take the brush and dishwashing liquid and scrub around the mower and rinse. Apply the degreaser and scrub it with a brush as well. Make sure the degreaser is rinsed well so as to not let it sit on the mower over the winter months.
Number 5: Clean the air filter and replace it if needed. This will be one less thing to do in the spring as well when start-up time comes.
Properly storing ones lawn mower will save time and money in the springtime. Doing things oneself gives a form of confidence and satisfaction. When one takes care of their investments they will in turn be there when they are needed.
