Have you ever had one of those mornings, where in no time at all you were thinking “It’s going to be one of THOSE days”? It isn’t long you have been up and about, and something doesn’t go quite right. You stub your toe, the toilet clogs or you trip over the dog then spill your first drink of the day. Ugh!
When occurrences like these are your first taste of the day, the prospect of having a great day doesn’t look too encouraging. Granted, you probably cannot avoid these kinds of things happening, but you can make sure it is not the first experience you encounter after waking up. By ensuring your first experience is a positive one, you are able to set the tone for a much more cheerful and upbeat day, despite the sore toe.
First, allow yourself a bit of time to wake up slowly. Maybe you need to set your clock five minutes earlier, to allow for time to do this. But do try to begin your day by not having to hit the floor running. Sit up in bed, stretch out those sleepy muscles and come to life just a bit as you sit there relaxing for a moment.
Take notice of the sounds of the birds singing outside or the quiet of your space. Feel the sun as it shines in the window. Take in the pleasant relaxation of the moment. Then, think of one thing that makes you feel really good or happy. Maybe it is your spouse, a grandchild, your puppy, the smell of flowers. Whatever your happy thought is, think it. Embrace it and really allow yourself to feel it.
Take a moment to appreciate all that is good in life (or even just a few things). Perhaps you have a wonderful family, a good job, a safe and comfortable home, great friends that you really enjoy being with. Surely, there are wonderful things that are present in your life, no matter what circumstances you are facing.
Keep out any and all negatives. This is a time for nurturing yourself in a positive way. If any negatives begin to surface in your thoughts, shut them out immediately, and replace them with pleasant ones. Setting up a positive mindset from the beginning of the day (before those feet of yours even hit the floor) can make all the difference in the world to how you experience today.
By taking just a few extra moments each day to give yourself this gift of a positive start, it will lift you up and have a significant impact on how the rest of your day unfolds and how you face whatever else may come your way.
Remember too, that once your feet hit the floor, you still have the entire day ahead of you to make the best choices you can and to make the most of each opportunity that comes your way.
