A lot of women tend to lean to one particular style when it comes to fashion. There are usually variations, but they all typically derive from one style point. Once we get comfortable in a specific expressive style, it’s hard to turn the wheel and try new trends or anything outside of our fashion comfort zone. I find that I also have the same dilemma. Though stylish and fabulous, a lot of my wardrobe consists of a lot of basics, neutrals and black, black, black. I’ve even been affectionately nicknamed Johnny Cash for my love of all things black, but this New Year, there’s going to be some change in my color palette. I’m also going to introduce some new fashion trends, and revive some of my oldie but goodie fashion faves in my wardrobe by giving them a little life, and inducing them with some current show stopping newbies. I’ve set three New Year’s fashion resolutions in order to accomplish this wardrobe transformation.
1. Infuse With Color
When it comes to styling myself, it’s hard to look at bright colors and multi colored pieces. It just hasn’t been a part of my personal style aesthetic. Some colors that are great year around are mustard, red, eggplant and salmon, so I plan on starting there. All four colors are easy to mix with items you already own. All work well with black, cream/off white, jeans, and can easily be subdued under a boyfriend jacket, a blazer or light cardigan. There are many other colors that can rejuvenate last season’s trends. There are other colors worth giving a shot like olive, royal blue, magenta and pewter.
2. Stripe Me Beautiful
Stripes will be big in the upcoming year. My two favorite striped color pattern combinations are navy with white, and black and white. These stripe patterns are great and are also easy to integrate with items you already own, or you can use them to create outfit that jump right into current trends. A long thin red cardigan will look amazing paired with navy and white striped dress. A salmon color top will give brightness to a black and white striped sweater. Other visually pleasing stripes are Charcoal with black stripes and white with charcoal stripes. There are endless combinations when it comes to stripes and solids.
3. Sexy Pants
My biggest fashion resolution has to do with something that plagues all women. The pants issue. All of us have an array of jeans and really they all look alike. A lot of times, there’s very little color difference and to a casual observer it may appear that you only own three pairs. Light, dark and one somewhere in between, when in reality you probably have over twenty. Same issue with dress pants. How many different color pants can you wear to work or to go out casually? We all end up stuck with black, charcoal, gray, cream and white for the most part, and in the winter it’s down to mostly just black. Even leggings are affected by the pant issue. I have so many black leggings that if I tied them all together they would probably circle the earth at least twice. It’s ridiculous. I mean everyone must think I only own one pair. So this year, I’m throwing out all those leggings and replacing them with a few newbies.
Moto pants come in just about any fabric, from jeans to cotton. You can dress them up or dress them down. They mostly are detailed around the knee or thigh area creating a smooth fashionable biker chic edge without the roughness.
Riding pants are more detailed on the sides. They sometimes come with a little bit of leather trimming which is great for fall and winter, and they’re also a new trend.
Utility pants are also trendy and can easily replace some of my outdated leggings and traditional dress pants. They’re very versatile and can be dressed up for work or worn casual for play.
With all these new trends and updates added to my closet, the new year should be full of fashion, fun, and jealous stares.
