Have you ever been to a restaurant that featured a vase on the table with a single, delicate flower? It’s a simple look that’s always elegant. Most of us have a vase or two lying around the house but they’re just so ordinary. Create a fake vase, using Styrofoam, and you’ll have something new and fabulous to use as a table centerpiece or just a shelf décor piece.
Styrofoam cones are really cheap and available in many different sizes at craft stores. Choose just one cone, to make one flower vase, or several cones to make a grouping. The cones can be all the same size or can vary in sizes.
Select the paint you want to use for the vase. Gold, silver or other metallic paints give the vase an elegant look but you can paint the cone any color you want. Paint them all the same color or paint each one a different color. Just make sure the paint you choose is suitable for Styrofoam since some paints can melt it.
Cut the very tip of the cone off then paint. It might take more than one coat to get the coverage and shade you want. After the paint is dry there are any number of designs you can do to make the décor piece you want. One way to make the cone vase look even more elegant is to glue on fake jewels. Available in many sizes, shapes and colors, the jewels can be found at any craft store. Glue them randomly, all over the vase, or glue a line of them straight down the front.
Some things you can use to decorate the cone vase include buttons, wrought iron pieces, flat wooden shapes, old post earrings, beads, small-diameter roping, fringe, sequin, pom-poms, tie tacks, or even painted, dry beans. Glue or otherwise attach the chosen embellishments in the pattern you want.
Create a different look for the Styrofoam vase by cutting images from cloth. Cut out flower shapes, seashell images – whatever you want. Use decoupage adhesive to attach the cloth shapes. Decoupage is sold at craft stores and is especially designed for attaching cloth or paper to other objects.
When you’re finished decorating the vase simply poke a hole in the top and insert the selected, artificial flower. The flower should be a fairl large one for the best look. Make tiny cone vases to create a décor piece for a shelf. Make really tall ones to put on the ends of a mantle. The cute single-flower décor is suitable for most any room of the house.
