Kristen Anderson wanted to kill herself and get out of her misery. Her life was full of problems that she could not handle any longer. One day she decided to place herself on railroad tracks and just wait for a train to run her over. Then the song, Amazing Grace, turned everything around for her.
Kristen was 17 years old and lived in Chicago. The pain was too great in her life and she decided one night to end it all. A freight train which had 33 cars, ran over her body cutting both of her legs off. She did not die as she had hoped but instead right there and then, had an experience with God. She heard the song, Amazing Grace. The words to that song were in her heart even though she heard no voice singing. The words were very real to her. According to Charisma Magazine July 2010, Kristen Anderson states, “I didn’t know at the time in my life that I could go to God for comfort, strength, wisdom and understanding. I stuffed it all down inside.”
A lot had happened in Kristen’s life to make her want to die. A good friend hung himself to death. Another friend was killed in a motorcycle accident and a few months later another friend died in a car accident. Her grandmother passed away without any warning, and she was sexually assaulted by a good friend. She went through a period of great depression too. Depression ran in her family beginning with her father. It was after all this that Kristen started planning on how she wanted to take her life. She felt like she had nothing to live for and that her life did not matter anymore. Now, she realizes that Satan, the devil, was giving her these thoughts and making her feel this way. According to Charisma Magazine July 2010, Kristen stated “I felt hopeless, and I didn’t want to be here. I took such an extreme route because I just didn’t trust any other route. I figured this was the only way I could die.”
Kristen joined a nondenominational church which was the best thing that she could do. She became involved with certain ministries which helped her greatly. She knows that Satan was out to destroy her life and he was responsible for the suicidal thoughts. She wants others to know that suicide is never the answer. She said the answer is accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior and building a strong relationship with Him.
Today, Kristen is 27 years old and has graduated from college. She travels to many places telling her story and she helps others who are having the same suicidal thoughts like she once had.
If you are struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, you can be victorious just like Kristen was. Kristen is right when she says that suicide is never the answer. God has so much planned for your life. If you will only give Him a chance, He will come through for you.
