Sun rooms offer a winter retreat that gives you the exposure to the sun that you need to escape the feeling of cabin fever. Having a surface that absorbs the heat of the sun is a great way to keep with the feeling of warmth that a sun room provides. Here are a few sun room flooring options that absorb heat well.
Slate tile is natural slate stone that is cut into thin sections, between 1/4 inch to 1 inch thick. The irregularity of the height of the tile can be harder to work with, but slate absorbs heat from the sun very well. Slate tile is also a very attractive flooring. With several grain patterns that make up the tile, slate has swirls of browns, oranges and reds that compliment its mostly charcoal color.
Cork Flooring is made of 100% ground bark, which is generally collected from fallen oak trees and pressed into sheets. The sheets are then cut into 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick pads that are glued to the surface of sheeting or concrete to make a cork floor covering. Cork floor is naturally warm because it is made of wood, but does not have the cool-to-the-touch feeling of hardwood flooring. The sun beating on the cork floor keeps the floor warm for hours as the cork stores the heat and releases it as the day goes on. Cork flooring is certified by the Green Building Council and counts toward LEED points in lead accreditation.
Finished Concrete Floor
One of the more recent trends in building is to finish the concrete slab with finished texture for interior use. Concrete is very absorbent of energy because of it’s rock like nature. The biggest downside to concrete floor slabs in that without the sun, the concrete can be very cold to the touch. Finished concrete floor systems should be equipped with in floor hydronic heating create a comfortable ambient heat that starts at the floor and moves to the ceiling.
These are just a few flooring options for sun rooms. Sun rooms can be adorned with many different types of flooring depending on your style, taste, and budget. Whatever your choice, you can enjoy your sun room on those long winter days and bring the outdoors in without the chill and the bite of winter.
