It is incredibly important to wear sunscreen all year long. The sun’s ultraviolet rays penetrate most cloud cover and even penetrate glass such as windows. Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds so even on cloudy days sunscreen is vital. In winter, although the sun isn’t as hot the UV rays are still wreaking havoc on our skin.
In the summer, sand will reflect 25% of the sun’s rays. In the winter the snow will reflect 80% of the sun’s rays. The sun’s rays, both direct and reflected, can cause skin cancer, premature aging, age spots and rashes. In the winter, although more of our skin is covered and protected, our face and hands are still exposed and vulnerable.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that a broad spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) water-resistant, SPF of at least 30 be worn all year.
When shopping for sunscreen for the face there are two things that should be taken into consideration. Texture is important, the product should not leave the skin with an oily or greasy feel. Also, the product should wear well under make-up. If I can’t wear make-up over my sunscreen then I’ll skip the sunscreen although I know it’s bad for my skin- I need my make-up!
Neutrogena has a great sunscreen for a reasonable price. It’s called Neutrogena Ultrasheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. This sunscreen has a great texture, it goes on light and is not oily, which makes make-up application a breeze. It comes in different SPF’s and is about $22.99 for a 3 oz bottle.
I read a review of Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face SPF 30. This product sounded awesome. It left the person’s skin feeling silky smooth and not at all greasy. The price however is about $40.99.
Another nice sunscreen is La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Tinted Crème. This one is tinted to allow for a little coverage with your sunscreen, so you can skip the foundation. The SPF in this product is 50 and it runs about $47.00.
