Many people who enjoy crafting overlook projects that concern wooden creations. Most of these require saws, screwdrivers and hammers to finish the project. However, there are lots of wooden things you can build without ever picking up a tool – other than a hot glue gun. Build your own mail organizer, printer paper holder and more with little effort at all!
Look around a craft store and you’ll find many different pieces of wood that work well to create new and useful wooden organizers. You don’t need heavy, bulky pieces. Choose pieces that are inexpensive, thin and flat. make most any of the organizers by simply gluing everything together.
You might not think that glue will hold wood very well, but in this case, it certainly will. Start with a large piece of thin wood as the back of the organizer. Paint the wood or use it in its unfinished state. Take a second, smaller piece of wood and attach it to the first one. To do this, decide on what you will use as “spacers”. The spacers will give you a way to connect the two boards while keeping them apart from each other. Spacers can be beads, pencil erasers, bottle caps, buttons or similar things.
Turn the smallest piece of wood so that you are looking at the backside. Position the beads, spaced evenly apart, around three sides of the wood. Add glue to the spacers once again, turn the wood over, then position it on the larger piece. The top area of the smaller wood piece should be open, with no spacers, but the sides and bottom will have spacers. With this arrangement, you can hang it on the wall, then use it to hold mail.
Make a larger version, using a piece of wood that’s larger than a piece of printer paper. For the smaller piece of wood, choose a piece that is a little wider than the paper but a little shorter. Use the spacers to position the smaller piece on the larger one. Now hang this arrangement by a desk and use it for holding copy paper.
Decorate the organizers with paint, buttons, ribbon, paint markers, stencils, rub-on appliques, dimensional paint, fake flowers or other embellishments to create the look you want. The finished organizer can be made in different sizes and has many uses!
