Because this recipe is so easy and delicious I eat this yummy hot apple treat almost every day in the fall and winter months. Fall and apples go hand in hand but this healthy hot apple treat is great not only in the fall but year round. Like most people I love hot apple desserts. What I don’t love is all the sugar, fat and highly processed extras that tend to come along with them. This delicious healthy hot apple treat can be made in less than three minutes, is fat free, sugar free, preservative free and yet tastes remarkably like a baked apple dessert.
Everything in the recipe is all natural and good for you yet it totally fills my need for sweets and fills me up with healthy apple fiber. And just in case that wasn’t enough to make you want to try it, eating apples regularly (including this hot apple dessert) may help prevent disease. “Epidemiological studies have linked the consumption of apples with reduced risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and diabetes1.” Cinnamon is also reputed to be good for the digestive system and may also have other healing properties.
The recipe below serves one. If you want to make more than one serving at a time, just multiply by whatever number of people you want to serve. This hot apple treat can be enjoyed as a dessert, snack, and even as part of a healthy breakfast.
Hot Apple Treat Ingredients
1 medium apple (sweet varieties work better; I tend to use Gala, Pippin, Lady, or McIntosh apples)
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon water
Hot Apple Treat Directions
– Wash, core and dice apple (I use one of those all in one slicer/corers and then cut the slices in quarters). For even heating, try to make the diced pieces relatively uniform in size. Compost or trash the core.
-Place diced apple pieces in a shallow microwave save bowl.
-Sprinkle the cinnamon evenly over the apple pieces and toss (or turn with a spoon or fork) to coat.
-Sprinkle the water over the tops of the apple pieces.
-Microwave on high for 60-90 seconds (microwave times may vary). Start with 60 seconds and add more time if needed.
-The apple will have naturally generated some apple juice so you’ll have a lot more liquid than you started with. This is normal. Stir the apple cinnamon mixture to coat and then let it sit for about 30 seconds to cool down and absorb some more of the liquid mixture. Stir again before eating.
-Enjoy your delicious hot apple treat!
You can make this hot apple treat your own by adding raisins (I presoak mine overnight so they’re more plump and delicious) or varying the spices (you can add more or less or use allspice, nutmeg, or other spices. If you prefer your apple drier or mushier just use a little less or more water.
I hope you enjoy my healthy hot apple treat as much as I do!
