Singer songwriter Taylor Swift’s long awaited third album, Speak Now, hit stores on October 25th and, as expected, it reads like a storybook of her life in the spotlight.
Swift has always written highly personal songs from the heart, but this time only thinly disguises who the songs are about.
And already, Swift’s new album has got people talking. The most dissected tracks on the album include the songs “Back to December”, “The Story of Us”, “Innocent” and “Dear John”. In a move reminiscent of Carly Simon’s 1970’s hit song “You’re So Vain”, Swift has fans speculating who exactly her songs are about.
Fans already got a sneak preview of her song “Innocent”- a tune clearly aimed at rapper Kanye West- at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.” But it’s nice to finally put a name to the song (the name of the song was not revealed during her performance last month).
But are some of Swift’s other songs on Speak Now directed to her ex-boyfriends?
Last December, Us Magazine reported that Swift and her beau of three months, Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner, had split up. The lyrics to “Back to December” include Swift apologizing for “that night” in December and practically asking for a second chance with, “Maybe this is wishful thinking,
Probably mindless dreaming, If we loved again I swear I’d love you right.”
The lyrics to “The Story of Us” include, ” Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room…and we’re not speaking…How did we end up this way? See me nervously pulling at my clothes and trying to look busy, And you’re doing your best to avoid me”.
In an interview with Yahoo Music, Swift said of “The Story of Us”, “It was at an awards show, and there had been a falling out between me and this guy…..we’re sitting six seats away from each other and just fighting this silent war… It’s so terribly, heartbreakingly awkward.”
Swift and former boyfriend Joe Jonas had a nasty break up back in 2008 when he infamously dumped her over the telephone. Swift addressed the matter later that year with her song “Forever and Always” in which she referred to Jonas as “a scared little boy”.
Jonas retorted with the Jonas Brothers song, “Much Better”, which included the lyrics, “Now I’m done with superstars….and all the tears on her guitar”. It goes on to say that Jonas’ new lady is “much better”. Ouch.
“The Story Of Us” could be about Swift’s run-in with Jonas at a recent awards show.
Then there’s the most talked about song on Speak Now, the dreaded “Dear John”. Did anyone even know Swift dated John Mayer? Because he’s usually the one who kisses and tells (just ask Jessica Simpson!).
Last January EOnline reported that the Swift and Mayer were spotted together on a dinner date in Nashville, but at the time it was pegged as a friendly business date, not a romantic one. But could there have been more to it?
Swift’s new song “Dear John” talks about a dude who messed with her big time- and since she’s naming names, fans are assuming it’s about Mayer.
With lyrics like, “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with. Don’t you think nineteen’s too young to be played …by your dark, twisted games …You’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand …and I’ll look back in regret I ignored what they said ‘Run as fast as you can.”
Speculations aside, the biggest question now is will Taylor Swift ever be able to get another date after this album? Because her relationships seem to be fair game when it comes to song material!
The Speak Now track list includes the following songs:
2. “Sparks Fly”
3. “Back to December”
4. “Speak Now”
5. “Dear John”
7. “The Story of Us”
8. “Never Grow Up”
10. “Better Than Revenge”
