This is the third year Team Cypress has participated in the Jingle Bell Run. It’s a 5k run/walk that benefits the Arthritis Foundation and will be held on December 4, 2010 this year. In 2008, the team had less than 10 runners. In 2009, over 50 runners and walkers were a part of the team. The size of Team Cypress for 2010 is currently at 25 and growing each week.
The team is mostly comprised of attendees of Cypress Wesleyan Church located in Galloway. Some are family and friends of those attendees. This is an open team and anyone is welcome to join.
In preparation of the race, a few practice sessions are scheduled on Saturday mornings. This is an opportunity for team members to hang out together and get some mileage in before the event. It is also a great opportunity to meet other team members that you might not have known before.
Fundraising is also an option for the team members. This can be done in a variety of ways from sending out requests for donations on their website for the Jingle Bell Run to selling raffle tickets. Last year, Team Cypress raised over $2000.
The morning of the event, the team meets up at the church and carpools downtown. They hang out together as a group before the race starts. Each person runs or walks their own pace, but as they reach the finish line, everyone congregates in one spot to cheer on all the other members of the team as they cross the finish.
Team Cypress has a great time with this event and it is a great way to bring people together while raising money for a good cause. Many of the team members get to meet other people that they may not have known before. For others, it’s a great way to spend some time socially. No matter the reason members join the team, ultimately they all have a great time together.
Being part of a team creates a sense of community and adds to the enjoyment of the race atmosphere. If you would like to create a team for the Columbus Jingle Bell Run, you can go to the Columbus Jingle Bell Run website.
