There are many parents that would like a better relationship with their teenager or preteen. Is it asking to much to meet them halfway? The solution that many parents are missing is texting.
I know that sometimes it is hard to learn new things and the lingo for texting is a bit different than most parents are used to. It would be well worth taking the 10 minutes to review it online. Then you can start texting. As a parent you can be stubborn and tell your kids you don’t want to text and they have to call or you can meet them halfway and take up texting.
Remember when you had to have that awkward chat with your parents about the birds and the bees? Remember when that cute guy winked at you and you were bursting inside yet you just couldn’t bring yourself to tell your mom. Texting is one of the simplest ways for parents to communicate with their children. They are going to call you when you need to pick them up but if you want to know how the event really went. Text them and ask!
Texting opens up a whole new line of communication for parents and teens. It is much easier to tell someone something when you are sending it to them via text. I have learned things from my daughter about her and her friends that I may never have known had I not texted to ask how things where going. It is a secure and comfortable area for the teens and if it helps us to communicate with them and stay more in the “teenage loop” so to speak, then why not.
So I encourage you to start small and stick with it. Today after your child gets out of school text and ask how their day was. When you get fine then follow up with another questions. Remember they reply to each other with K and fine and yeah so don’t be discouraged. Don’t be afraid to be part of their lives. Today too many parents accept that their child doesn’t want to talk with them but maybe the fact is that the child is uncomfortable. Once they realize they can talk with you and it is not near as awkward as the face to face can be, then you are off and running to a better relationship. It may take time for them to come around but when you love someone they are worth the time and effort!
