Sometimes coaching has nothing to do with sports or athletes, and everything to do with being a friend. I’d like to thank Coach Danny Tipton for the impact he had on my life.
Some of the funniest memories I have from high school involve Coach Tipton. He wasn’t my coach or even my teacher, nevertheless, I learned from him. His classroom was next to my locker, so I talked to him everyday. If you were down or depressed, he made sure he got a smile and a laugh out of you before he went on his way.
He was also a great looking guy, so many of the girls had crushes on him- those of us who didn’t, picked on him about it often, and we gave him the nicknames “Coach Snookums” and “Coach Slickum” (a joke regarding his hair). He took it in stride and if we annoyed him, he certainly never showed it. He let us practice our Spanish on him, helped us with homework questions, and set us straight about sorting gossip from fact. All the while, he was coaching and teaching his own students.
Thanks, Coach T, for all the laughs and teaching me to take the time out of my day to care about others and being a friend to those in need.
