Thanksgiving is the time to celebrate the bountiful harvest produced throughout the United States during the spring, summer and fall months. The horn-of-plenty, pilgrims and turkeys symbolize the season to many individuals. Homemade turkeys are a craft that is enjoyed by the young and old alike. Create several to decorate the table and surrounding area.
Handprint turkeys are fun for the preschoolers and young children. Pour some tempera paint onto a paper plate. Let the children dip the palm of their hand and fingers into the paint. Lift the painted hand from the paper plate and let any excess paint drip off the hand. Have the child spread their fingers and place the hand on a piece of blank paper and press firmly. Remove the hand and let the paper dry. Wash the hand before continuing. Draw a beak, eye and feet on the turkey head (the thumb). Add lines to the tail feathers (which are the fingers).
Switch the handprint turkey up a bit and roll out a piece of sugar cookie dough. Have a child spread their fingers and place their hand on the cookie dough. Cut around their hand and then back the cookie. Allow the child to decorate the surface with frosting, candy corn and sprinkles. A great edible turkey!
Make an eco-friendly turkey from a pine cone, peanut butter, bird seed and a candy orange slice. Roll the wide end of the pine cone in peanut butter then in bird seed. Push the candy orange slice on the pointed end of the pine cone to make the head. Place the pine cone turkey on a small paper plate at each place setting. After the meal, take the pine cone outside and place it where the birds can find it.
Make an edible turkey from chocolate Rice Krispies. Make the Rice Krispy bars according to the directions on the package. Roll the Rice Krispy treats into two inch balls. Use candy corn as a beak and push it into the center of the ball. Push two small chocolate chips, M&M’s or skittles into the face as eyes. Poke five toothpicks in the back to form tail feathers. Place Froot Loops, colored marshmellows or gum drops onto the toothpicks to make colored feathers. Let the Rice Krsipy treats harden in the fridge. Place on a Thanksgiving tray and have a turkey for dessert.
