The first Thanksgiving looks nothing like we have today. Thanksgiving began as a way to celebrate the first successful harvest. Some Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving with days of prayers, not feasting. As we gather around the Thanksgiving table and the delicious feast, remember to be extra thankful.
If you’re the person preparing the Thanksgiving Feast, you’ll need to make a good plan. Careful planning will make cooking the Thanksgiving meal easy, allowing you to enjoy the holiday with your family and friends.
The Traditional Thanksgiving Feast consists of the basic like roasted turkey, potatoes, corn, cranberry sausage and pumpkin pie.
The turkey is a main course to the Thanksgiving Meal. While most traditionally roast the turkey, you can change things up a little. When thinking about the turkey consider marinating the turkey. This will give the turkey some additional flavor. Also, consider grilling or deep frying the turkey. This will change things up, without using much additional time.
The delicious turkey usually has a side of mashed potatoes with it. There are many, many variations on mashed potatoes. Sour cream and chives is a wonderful compliment to turkey. Don’t forget the gravy. Every family has that one person that can make delicious homemade gravy, seek them out and ask them to help out.
Homemade stuffing is another delicious side when done right. There are multiple variations like sausage stuffing, cornbread and sage stuffing, even oyster stuffing. Homemade stuffing can be made ahead of time. Some people like to add stuffing in the turkey while cooking, others think that idea is unsafe. However you cook your stuffing, people are sure to love it.
Other wonderful sides to your Thanksgiving dinner are Cranberry Sauce, Green Bean Casserole, corn (whole kernel or cream).
Dinner rolls are another favorite to every Thanksgiving Feast. You could make them from scratch earlier in the day or even the day before. There are some really good refrigerated dinner rolls that you can just bake up. If you really want to save time, there are brown and serve rolls that your family is sure to enjoy.
No Thanksgiving Feast is complete without a great tasting pie or two. Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie and Apple Pie are the traditional pies of Thanksgiving but you can shake things up again by adding your personal favorite.
Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with the Traditional Thanksgiving Meal. While everyone enjoys the traditional, sometimes it’s fun to have something a little different. Don’t forget to spend some time decorating the Thanksgiving table.
