Bustling, basting, oven baking,
Snapping beans, potatoes to boil.
Hurry, now, the biscuits need to come out!
Stir quick, don’t let the sweet cream spoil!
Brown sugar for the yams and pumpkin,
Fresh butter for the corn,
Baste, stir, mix, baste more.
Oh no, the day’s no longer morn!
Stir, sniff, clean spoon for tasting,
Pinch more of this and that,
Forget that latest recipe –
Got this menu down pat!
The bird sure does smell good, Mom.
Don’t touch – not ready yet.
But all is in the works, my child,
For a feast we won’t forget
Now gather ’round the table all
On this Thanksgiving Day.
And everyone is thankful
With one thing they all say.
So happy everyone is here!
Haven’t seen you since last year;
Now eat, and eat and eat some more.
Delicious, mmmmm, a burp, o dear!
Sip, eat, and sip and eat again,
And ease the belt a bit.
I know I can’t get up right now,
But I can hardly sit!
Now TV bowls and rahs and cheers;
Snacks, dips and finger food.
Heavy lids with jaws ajar.
Don’t wake him, that’s just rude!
Now rouse and taste another piece
Of scrumptious apple cake.
But darkened sky and stifled yawns
Make it hard to stay awake.
So sorry, but we have to go
Leave happy with no cares
The meal was great and we’ll be back
To eat some more next year.
