“Honey, I’ll clean the fish tank.” Dad disappears downstairs.
Tables added to accommodate.
4 a.m. comes early. The bird must go in.
Will they notice if I sneak some stuffing?
Tables are set.
The doorbell rings.
Aunt Judy’s jello,
Aunt Nancy’s potatoes,
A bottle of wine.
Uncle Mike carves and dinner begins.
Food and Family.
Food and laughter.
Rolls and pickles, green beans, stuffing, turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, and more.
Time to loosen the belt.
It seems there could be no more.
And planning for Christmas can begin.
