At Thanksgiving, we are supposed to be thankful, but why is that? Thanksgiving, originally, was about a gathering of Pilgrims and Indians being thankful for that years good harvest, but some historians say that is not necessarily how our “modern” Thanksgiving started. Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, over 200 years later, proclaimed that date in November as Thanksgiving. Either way, it is a day of thanks. So what are we thankful for every year? Below find some reasons to be thankful.
Food on Our Table
If we have food to eat, we are lucky and should be thankful. Many people all over the world, including the United States, go without food on a daily basis.
Family and/or Friends
Being with family (our kids, aunts etc..), and getting along with family is a blessing, since so many families can become divided. The same goes for friends. We are lucky to have good friends that we care about and care about us.
Being healthy is a gift when many countries (including the US) have so many sick people that don’t have health insurance, money to pay for medicine or a support system.
Some would argue that possessions don’t make the man or woman, but we are fortunate if we have possessions that are meaningful to us such as a letter from a grandmother who’s passed away, a lamp handed down from generation to generation, a photo album with all of our prized memories etc…There are people so poor who don’t get to enjoy these things in their lifetime.
Can you imagine a cold winter without a coat? Boots? Gloves? Even underwear? We are lucky to be able to afford clothes to keep us warm, to make us cooler, to cover our bodies and to wear everyday.
A pet is not a necessity, however, for a lot of families, sick children, the elderly, pets can be a godsend. They give us unconditional love, and in return, we love them back and should be thankful for the opportunity to have them in our lives.
Whether your mentor is God, a teacher, your parents or a friend, thanking this person personally, or being thankful for them is a wonderful act on Thanksgiving. Not everyone is lucky enough to have that guidance in their life.
These are usually the things we are thankful for, and hopefully it gave you some ideas. There are so many other things and people to be thankful for, and each family and friend has their own ideas, which are all just as wonderful. So think about it, who or what else are you thankful for?
