A holiday meal usually means there will be more than one cook. One person does the turkey or ham, another does the pie or bread – it’s like that with big families. There’s always that one person who can’t or doesn’t like to cook and that person usually offers to bring the wine on Thanksgiving. If you’re that person don’t show up with that same old bottle of wine you bring year after year – at least not by itself. Make something a little more spectacular this year. Let all that delicious food the others are cooking for you be your motivation to create a fabulous wine bucket gift basket the host will never forget!
You might have read other articles online about how you can take old paint buckets and make them into assorted gift cans. That’s all well and good if you have hours to spend remaking a paint can. All that paint thinner work to remove paint from inside the can. It can take a long time to get every bit of it out and then you have that smell! Forget all that! Go to your local home improvement store and purchase a new can. They’re not expensive and they look and smell fine!
You can give the new can a paint job or do something else to decorate it. Instantly turn it into a nice ice bucket by simply painting it gold or even bronze. Use paints made especially for metallic surfaces for best results. Or, wrap the outside of the can with a chosen fabric or decorative paper. Make a matching round piece for the top of the lid.
You can make the handle of the paint bucket much more attractive and substantial by wrapping it with twine, small-diameter roping, ribbon, braided yarn or cloth strips. Simply hot glue one end to the end of the handle, wrap the material around the handle, then glue it at the opposite end.
Give the ice bucket a theme by gluing on a flat wooden piece, wooden monogram letters, a flat wrought-iron piece or even a maple leaf shape made from buttons. Fill the bucket with shredded paper, foil or cellophane to present it. It requires the paper to be tightly packed in order to hold the weight of the wine and keep it from falling to the bottom of the bucket.
Other small gifts can be presented in the can, if you want, like a wedge of wrapped cheese, candies, fruit or other items. It’s a memorable gift that shows you put in a little extra effort for your part of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner!
