Hundreds of street food enthusiasts as well as celebrity judges will be attending the Sixth Annual Vendy Awards. The Vendy Awards are a yearly competition in which street vendors compete for the coveted title of Ned York City’s Best Street Food Vendor. Tickets are sold for this wonderful event as a fundraiser for Urban Justice Center’s Street Vendor project. A ticket will buy you all-you-can-eat access to the best of the best street vendors as they compete against each other to win the Vendy Cup.
The event is so popular, that tickets for it were already sold out in August. The festivities will run from 12pm – 5pm on Saturday, September 25th on Governor’s Island in Downtown Brooklyn. Celebrity judges will include Tanya Wenman (Editor-in-Chief of Epicurious.com) Aaron Sanchez (Next Food Network Star) & Leslie Koch (President of Governors Island Corporation). Although general admission is already sold out, there are still a few Donor packages left at the $200, $500 or $1000 level.
The Vendy Awards, which are often referred to as “the Oscars of food for the real New York” announced their Dessert finalists today. It will be up to the audience at the event to decide who will come out the winner on September 25th, amongst the ten finalists chosen. A winner is chosen after the judges try samples of their cooking after waiting on line at their particular food cart. There are also musical performances and a raffle (at the end of the night).
Adults are encouraged to bring their children with them as this is a family-friendly event and children under the age of 8 are admitted for free. If you’d like to take home a souvenir from the event, aprons and t-shirts will be available for purchase.
