If you are not doing pull ups for strength or physical fitness you are missing out on a very important exercise. The pull up is the best upper body exercise you can do for the back, shoulders and arms. Many people want to do pull ups but do not have access to a pull up bar or would like to exercise at home, one way around that is to get a portable pull up bar.
You have two choices for pull up bars. The first is the type that hangs from the upper door frame in a doorway, your bodyweight will lock it in place. The other style is held in place by a bracket attached to the frame on each side of the door. The first one is portable so you can take it with you and the second is permanent.
Because the one bar is portable you can take it with you when you travel and you will be able to keep working out. The main disadvantage of using these bars is if you are tall, you have to bend your knees to keep your feet off the floor. These portable bars also have a couple extra handles that are at right angles from the main bar that give you more options for how you hold on.
Take advantage of these other handles because the more variety you have, the more your muscles will benefit. Do not do only the basic pull ups, you will stagnate and your muscles will not get the most development from your efforts. If you are new to pull ups don’t worry that you may not be able to pull yourself up, give yourself time and you will get there.
If you can not pull yourself up, stand on a chair in front of the pull up bar and lower yourself down. Your muscles are exercised whether you pull up or lower down, so at least do the lowering till you start getting stronger. Do a number of repetitions a few times per week till you gain strength. You could also stand under the bar, while holding on jump and pull yourself up, do whatever you can to do your pull ups.
If you have an exercise or weight lifting program that you currently do, try to work in the pull ups at least three days a week without over training yourself. If you are more advanced then you might be able to do more, other wise take it easy and avoid over training.
