Last time the teams checked into the Pit Stop at St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. Jill and Thomas were the first team to arrive last time so they were the first team to depart. Their clue instructed them to travel from St. Isaac’s Cathedral to the Abtobo Circus. When they got to the circus it was closed, thus allowing all the remaining teams to catch up.
The circus doors opened and the teams found a Detour of: Circus Band or Circus Clown. In Circus Band, both team members had to learn a song played on the accordion. They had to perform the song correctly with a band in order to get their next clue. The teams who did this one were Gary & Mallory and Nat & Kat. Nat & Kat learned their notes by assigning each key a number. They quickly finished. Mallory was confident in her music ability and father Gary picked up the notes from his daughter so they also finished quickly.
In Circus Clown both teammates had to spin 10 plates on wooden sticks to get their next clue. The teams who decided to do this were: Michael & Kevin, Brook & Claire, Chad & Stephanie, Jill & Thomas, and Nick & Vicki. Brook & Claire figured out how to keep the plates spinning, finished fast and got the next clue first. Nick commented that his grandmother used to have a “clown room” so he didn’t like clowns. But this odd bit of his personal life seemed to help them because they also finished fast. Michael & Kevin eventually finished also. Chad & Stephanie and Jill & Thomas gave up and went to do the Circus Band task. Chad & Stephanie finished the Circus Band because Stephanie really helped Chad with it. Jill & Thomas floundered on that task to so went back to do the spinning plates and finally finished but were the last team to do so.
The next clue instructed everyone to solve a Russian mystery where the teams had to figure out the four golden creatures were attached to Bank Bridge. It wasn’t very hard because every taxi driver knew what to look for. Brook & Claire got there first and the next clue instructed them to walk to 1 Vladimirskiy Street Tower. At the tower only two people at a time could climb to the top to find their next clue. In finding the address they could ask people for directions but couldn’t pay a taxi to lead them to the place. Father/son Michael & Kevin claimed they read the clue carefully but paid their taxi to lead them to the address.
Nat & Kat and Nick & Vicki actually got to the address first. They floundered a bit at the top but eventually realized that they had to go to the Church on Spilled Blood because there was a figurine of it at the top of the tower. When they came down Nick decided to lie to Kevin & Michael and Brook & Claire about the clue. But the father/son and home shopping hosts figured it out. Teams were supposed to again walk to the church, but Kevin & Michael and Brook & Claire took taxis. Stephanie couldn’t find the clue at the top and Chad went up and saw the figurine. Chad and Stephanie also took a cab to the next task.
At the Church on Spilled Blood the clue told the teams to find the burial place of Peter the Great – which was Peter and Paul fortress. Michael saw Nick and said he lied to them about the previous clue. All four teams got the correct answer and headed over to Peter and Paul fortress. Brook and Claire realized they had taken a cab instead of walked so they asked their driver to take them back to the tower so they could walk to the church and not get a penalty. Nick & Vicki couldn’t find a taxi so they went back to the bridge to get their old taxi driver who had been waiting for them the whole time.
Meanwhile Nat & Kat found the fortress and opened the clue and found a Roadblock. In the Roadblock one team member had to knock down three rounds of Russian bowling pins called godorki by throwing a stickbat. Kat, Michael, Brook, Nick, Stephanie, Thomas and Gary did the Roadblock. Everyone except Michael and Stephanie got the technique down of throwing the stick. Kat finished first and the clue told them to check in to the Pit Stop inside a bastion in the fortress.
First on the mat were Nat & Kat. The doctors won $5000 each. Then were Brook & Claire. Phil commented that they missed the penalty by going back to walk to the church. Next on the mat were Nick & Vicki (huh? what happened to their Speed Bump??), then Gary & Mallory and Jill & Thomas.
Michael finally finished and they had trouble with their taxi driver because they didn’t want to give him the correct fare. Kevin was acting sort of like a brat and was trying to weasel his way out of paying. Michael finally gave the driver $40. They ran to the mat but Phil informed them they made two mistakes and therefore had an hour penalty. Chad & Stephanie also had to settle their taxi fare and incurred a 30-minute penalty so therefore they were still in the race. Michael & Kevin were eliminated and deservedly so. They were never that interesting and their constant blunders meant elimination at some point. Buh-bye!
Next time: The teams travel to Oman. Gary gets lost while driving prompting Mallory to pray.
