This episode had teams strategizing in the airport, playing with dogs and blocks of ice.
Last time teams checked into the Asebi D/A Primary School in the Dodowa District of Ghana. Before opening the next clue the teams got to help rehabilitate the school with new paint. All the super cute kids were happy and sang the teams a song.
Connor and Jonathan were the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop, so this time they were the first team to depart. They found out they would be flying to Kiruna, Sweden in Swedish Lapland and they had to find the warehouse where the Ice Hotel was stored during the summer. The flight was pre-booked but teams didn’t have to take the flights reserved for them. All the teams made it to the airport but only father/son team Kevin and Michael who weren’t eliminated last time had a plan. They decided to look for a different connection in transfer city Frankfurt and used their cab driver’s phone. A very helpful Lufthansa worker told them of an earlier connection that would get them in two hours before the other flight. They decided to share the info with father/daughter team Gary and Mallory and these two teams got pre-booked on the earlier flight. Doctors Nat and Kat also decided to look for an earlier connection. Television shopping hosts Brook and Claire followed N&K and these teams also got on the earlier flight. Team Capella saw Mallory acting happy and wanted to see what was going on but they were too late getting on the earlier flight.
In Frankfurt the teams only had one hour to make the earlier connecting flight. Even though it seemed like Kevin and Michael might not make it, they did, along with the other three teams. This two-hour advantage turned out to make a big difference.
When the teams landed in Kiruna they all raced out of the airport to marked cars and drove themselves to the Ice Hotel warehouse. Nat and Kat and Brook and Claire got there first. The clue was written in Swedish on a block of ice. Some friendly locals told them the clue was directions the teams had to follow carefully to get to Fjellborgs Lodge. Gary and Mallory and Kevin and Michael then made it to the warehouse. The Speed Bump that K&M had to perform was really super easy. They had to sit on two ice chairs for 10 minutes. What? But to keep them warm they got to watch a TV playing a wood fire. Although they had this slight diversion they somehow got to Fjellborgs Lodge first.
At Fjellborgs Lodge was a Roadblock that only one team member had to perform. The team member would pick some sled dogs, attach them to a wheeled sled, go through a course and grab colored flags along the way. In the middle of the course they would exchange the flags for a packet of hides, continue on the course until the end, deliver the hides to get their next clue. Michael was having a ball doing this and everyone else too for that matter. Mallory was the only one who missed a flag and had to do the course again. Meanwhile the other teams landed, found the Ice Hotel warehouse and proceeded to the dog sled task. Jill and Thomas got lost trying to find the Roadblock but still decided to do the task even though they had the Express Pass.
The next clue instructed the teams to go to Vassijaur Train Station. Michael and Kevin opened the clue first to find a Detour of Sleds or Beds. In Sleds teams had to ride a seated sled down a course in less than one minute 58 seconds. In Beds teams had to put up a traditional Sami tent called a goahti and assemble the inside with hides and a fire. Michael and Kevin chose Beds. Beds took a while because it was very tedious and everything had to be exact. Nat and Kat, Gary and Mallory and Brook and Claire chose Sleds. Sleds was the faster task but controlling the sleds was a bit difficult. Kat had to redo the course when she got tangled in the netting. Mallory had to redo it too because she was one second off. Nat and Kat opened the next clue and found instructions to the next Pit Stop near the Norwegian border.
Meanwhile the other teams all opted to do Sleds. Jill and Thomas were the last team to get the Detour clue and headed over to Beds. At the task they saw that it would take a long time and knew they were last so used their Express Pass to bypass the task. At Sleds were Chad and Stephanie, Connor and Jonathan, Team Volleyball and Nick and Vicki who rode the chairlift to the start of the hill. Stephanie freaked out the whole way, fell over numerous times and started crying. Chad yelled at her to hurry up but she said she couldn’t do it. They reluctantly went to the Beds task. Connor and Jonathan and Team Volleyball also had trouble with the sleds so switched over to Beds. Nick and Vicki said they do a lot of winter sports so had no trouble with this task. At Beds Chad yelled with joy when he saw the other two teams show up to do the task. Team Volleyball and Team Capella were almost neck and neck because Volleyball didn’t do their interior correctly and had to redo it.
At the Pit Stop Nat and Kat were the first team to arrive and won a trip for two from Travelocity to Belize. Then Gary and Mallory, Brook and Claire, Kevin and Michael, Jill and Thomas, Nick and Vicki, Chad and Stephanie, and Team Volleyball were checked in. Some of the teams even lugged their block-of-ice clue to the mat even though it wasn’t required. Team Capella knew they were the last team to arrive and they sang during their elimination march to the mat. It’s too bad since they were nice boys but the singing really began to grate after a while.
Next time: Nat and Kat have trouble eating a reindeer head. Brook freaks out while dangling on a rope under a very high bridge.
