Satanism can have a lot of definitions and a lot of different meanings to different people. Many different things can make a person a Satanist, according to other people. Many atheists, agnostics, or deists are considered Satanists however the largest group of true Satanists, not just those considered ones by others, is those that follow the Church of Satan. This declared Satanism religion was founded in the 1950s by Magus Szandor Anton LaVey. Membership is kept secret so it is hard to estimate how many followers there are, however there are at least 4,000 in the United States alone. The symbol for Satanism is an upside down pentagram, it is the equivalent to what a cross is to Christianity.
The main guiding principles of satanism come from the Nine Satanic Statements and the Nine Satanic Sins. The Nine Satanic Statements outline what Satan means to the Church of Satan. It makes statements such as Satan represents vital existence and Satan represents kindness to those who deserve instead of love wasted on ingrates. Their views of Satan have the same guiding principles that other religions have of their deity however, with its own unique spin.
Another important factor of Satanism is The eleven Satanic Rules of Earth, which are similar to the ten commandments of Christianity. They read as followed, first, do not give opinions unless asked. Second, do not tell your troubles to others unless they want to hear them. Third, When in someone else’s lair(house) show them respect. Fourth, If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy. Fifth, do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal. Sixth, do not take something that does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved. Seventh, acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed is successfully to obtain your desires. Eighth, do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself. Ninth, do not harm little children. Tenth, do not kill non human animals unless you are attacked or for your food. Eleventh, when walking in open territory do not bother anyone, if someone bothers you ask them to stop, if they don’t, destroy them.
There are also the Nine Satanic Sins, just like the seven deadly sins of Christianity. The sins are stupidity, pretentiousness, sophism, self-deceit, herd conformity, lack of perspective, forget fullness of past orthodoxies, counterproductive pride, and lack of aesthetics.
Many people believe that Satanists hate Christians and followers of any other religion, However this is untrue, when asked what to say when people question their faith, higher members have told them to ignore it or have a civilized debate. No one endorses the kind of behavior to cause violence and fighting between people of different faiths. Of course their are people who would fight and kill over Satanism, but there are these same fanatics in every religion and should not be considered the stereotype of followers of The Church of Satan.
