The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are just around the corner. If you have guests who are vegetarian or are on special diets, or if you just want to continue your healthy diet, here are some different options for your holiday meal.
Unique healthy holiday dish options
1: One of my all time favorite dishes can be a healthy dessert, or served as a side dish or even an appetizer. Pumpkin bread makes a perfect sweet healthy bread! Served with low-fat vanilla ice cream, it makes a very nice healthy dessert as well. You can change an original pumpkin bread by replacing half the oil with apple sauce (this makes it extra moist too!), and replacing whole eggs with twice the amount of egg whites.
2: Looking for a substitute for mashed potatoes? Who doesn’t love scalloped potatoes? You can make a wonderful healthy scalloped potato dish. Use skim milk in place of whole milk, and low-fat cheese in place of regular cheese.
Remember, you can replace standard recipes with low fat or non-fat ingredients in most cases. Want a creamy dip? Use fat free cream cheese or light mayonnaise.
3: One of my favorite healthy appetizers is Crunchy Zucchini Rounds with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Goat Cheese. Its so easy, all you need to do is top sliced zucchini with a sun-dried tomato and a pinch of goat cheese, sprinkle with chives and drizzle with olive oil! Use low-fat cheese in a cheesy squash casserole for a healthy delicious holiday side dish.
4: Orange-Spinach salad using fresh spinach, navel oranges, pecans and sesame seeds is a very good and unique salad option.
5: For a vegetarian main dish, try a winter vegetable Shepherd’s Pie, or an Acorn Squash Stuffed with Chard and White Beans.
6: Try a different holiday pie this year and make Cranberry-Blueberry Pie. Use a low-fat crust and you’ll have a wonderfully scrumptious and healthy Thanksgiving dessert.
