When temperatures decide to linger in the teens and single digits warnings go out to protect pipes. It seems they could burst due to the expansion of frozen water inside them if left unprotected.
Keeping pipes warm and thawed has several different options one of which is to leave the doors open to essential pipes inside the home.
Essential pipes inside the home are liked to the kitchen and bathroom sinks. The home may be warm and comfortable but if you open or even crack the doors underneath the bathroom or kitchen sinks the warm air in the house will be drawn out. The home will feel much colder and may be costly when the heating bill comes around due to leaving the heat up instead of being able to turn it down.
If the doors are left closed there may be a fair amount of heat that goes down the drains, which might help to keep the pipes from breaking but heat down the drain makes it drafty.
To prevent warm air from escaping through the drains try putting in a stopper or closing the drain until use in the kitchen and bathroom, bathroom tub & shower drains to.
One of the best preventatives to keep the kitchen and bathroom pipes from freezing is to let the hydrants drip. Letting the water drip could make the water bill go up and it wastes water. But place something you can catch the water in and the water can be put to use.
You don’t have to have a bucket for a catch all you can use a tea pitcher, a glass or even an empty butter tub.
The water can be used to water plants, fill a birdbath or it can be boiled to make a pitcher of tea.
Another way to help keep pipes warm under the sinks is to wrap them in rags.
A properly insulated house will keep warm air in and may make the inside pipes warmer but where there is pipes there is usually drafts and the pull of outside air finding it’s way inside. Insulate around the pipes and there is still the suction of the drains. Close or plug the drains and you may find some relief from the outside cold.
When it warms up outside and it gets a little hot inside you may find that the crack of the doors to the essential pipes in the house may stabilize the temperature to a satisfactory level.
