My three children are older now, but believe it or not they still enjoy all the things we did when they were small. As a matter of fact I now have a grandchild whose mother is more than happy to repeat all the fun things we used to do. Sometimes I wonder if we’re going for the baby or for her. The fun weekend activities continue as tradition.
Free-Parks in and Around Delaware County, Pa
You just can’t beat a day at the park. We are lucky enough to have some of the greatest parks and an amazing wildlife reserve. A day at the park can be great three out of four seasons for an entire day of fun. Even in winter it’s great, you just have to limit your time due to temperatures. During the warmer seasons you can pack a lunch and make a whole day of it. Here is a list of some of the nicer parks to spend the day in Delaware County, Pa:
Ridley Creek State Park-A beautiful way to spend the day. Nothing but miles of beautiful scenery. They also have a “home” for horses. You can pay for a ride, and they have horse camp in the summer as well. Mostly though I”‘ve just taken advantage of the freedom to roam there with my kids and throw a Frisbee or play on the playground. There’s plenty of woods and trails to discover as well.

John Heinz National Wildlife Reserve-This is an amazing way to spend some weekend hours with your children. You’ll get to show them wildlife and plant life that even you didn’t know existed in this area. This reserve has miles upon miles of trails so every time you go it can be brand new since their little legs can take them only so far. You can pack a lunch and rent a canoe and even go fishing.

Gillespie Field-A local park to us, much smaller in comparison to Ridley Creek State Park. Definitely not a lack of fun though. Unfortunately many parks here in Clifton Heights are not in the best of conditions. This is not so for the park we just so happen to live near. Gillespie Field is well maintained and I think because of the closeness of the neighborhood troublemakers stay away. You can easily spend a whole Saturday here with your kids. There is a basketball court, two separate baseball fields and a small playground specifically for small children. Not to mention the great trail through the woods that runs along Darby Creek. We have spent many weekend days exploring the woods and fishing there.

Low Cost-Fun Saturday Kids Activities in Delaware County, Pa
Linvilla Orchards-This can either be a free or low cost weekend activity with your kids. It is free to enter and have fun looking at the animals and play on the playground. We used to do this every Saturday. Then there’s special events, such as holiday activities that always include a hayride along with other wonderful activities. They also have a store where everything is fresh from their orchards and everything that is already made is done so with their fresh ingredients.

Olympic Diner-Kids just love going out to eat. They look forward to the special occasion of eating out. Sometimes dining out with your kids can be a little stressful though, as kids will be kids and tend to get a little restless. At Olympic Diner you don’t feel that way at all. The relaxed atmosphere and most other patrons having kids and grandkids of their own makes this a worry free dining out experience with the kids. The whole menu is amazingly low cost. Just as you feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you enter this diner, you will feel the same way when you look at the meals and the prices. Many families make this a weekly activity they enjoy. Its great if you visit one of the above mentioned parks or Linvilla Orchards and work up everyones appetite. By the time your done visiting the park and going out to eat at Olympic Diner, the kids will have an awesome sleep by the end of your Saturday fun.
