If you are looking for a fun and unique vacation for you and your family you should consider a dude ranch. Nothing stirs up a child’s imagination more than the thought of cowboys, horses, and the wild west. Wyoming has some of the best dude ranches in the United States. Living there when I was young I can attest to the natural beauty and diversity of the state. In the wonder of the great outdoors you will find grasslands, rivers, wildflowers, valleys, and amazing wildlife. Wyoming dude ranches offer a family vacation that your family will cherish. Here are a few of the most popular dude ranches in Wyoming, all full of family, fun and activities for a memorable trip.
CM Ranch – Dubois,Wyoming
The first dude ranch on my list is located along the Wind River Mountain Range in a beautiful valley the CM Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming. Since 1927 this dude ranch has specialized in family vacations. Located close to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Yellowstone park it is easily accessible. Their guest accommodations include three authentic log houses with plenty of bedrooms for your children. They have a recreation building where you can enjoy games, cards, reading, ping pong tables, pianos and cozy fireplaces. Meals are served family style all together in their large dining room. Your breakfast is cooked to your order, featuring delicious homemade and freshly baked items.
Here you are able to get more information about their vacation rates and available times of year. There are many activities for adults and children of all ages. Some of the many activities for children include: roping a dummy steer, overnight campouts, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, cookouts and pack trips.
7 D Ranch – Cody, Wyoming
The 7 D Ranch is one of Wyoming’s most well known dude ranches. Open since 1958 they specialize on hosting a smaller number of guests so they are able to give a personalized experience for every family. Located 50 miles northwest of Cody, Wyoming in the breathtaking Absaroka Mountains, surrounded by a national forest. They offer a quiet, secluded dude ranch family vacation. All their quaint guest cabins are comfortable and perfectly decorated in authentic western themes. Here you can see their vacation rates and open season information.
Like most dude ranches the meals are served in a large family dining room. Some of the family activities you and your children can participate in are: horseback riding lessons, fly fish casting clinics, nature hikes, games and western dancing. There is babysitting available for children under three, and special counselors who organize children’s activities. A great highlight of a weekly vacation at this dude ranch is a fishing trip either to Bear tooth Mountains or Yellowstone National Park to see the Mammoth Hot Springs.
Elephant Head Lodge – Cody, Wyoming
The last dude ranch on my list probably has the most family oriented activities for your vacation. The elephant head lodge was built in 1910 by Buffalo Bill Cody’s niece and her husband. The lodge got its name from a famous rock formation overlooking the property that resembles and elephant. The lodge located in Cody, Wyoming is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This AAA Double Diamond approved log cabin resort is located less than 12 miles east of Yellowstone National Park.
The cabins you and your family will stay in are the original ones built by Buffalo Bill Cody’s niece, they have just been modernized. Here is a complete list of their accommodations and rates for peak and off season trips. They have cabins to accommodate anywhere from two to nine people. The real draw of this dude ranch is the large variety of fun things to do. An example of some are: nightly movies, campfires, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and playgrounds. With all these amenities, including a restaurant, you can enjoy nature on your next vacation with all the conveniences of home.
