This clip found by George Clarke, a Belfast film buff, clearly shows a woman in the Charlie Chaplin film “The Circus” walking down a street appearing to talk on a cell phone. Is the man a time traveler from the present day in the 1920s?
The short answer is, almost certainly not. There was no cell phone tower system in the 1920s. A man carrying a cell phone in that era would not get a signal. That leaves us with some alternate explanations.
First, it could be a hoax, using computer generated CGI. Clarke has some of his own film productions coming out, which he conveniently mentions at the beginning of the clip. What better publicity stunt than to claim he found someone talking on a cell phone eighty plus years ago.
Second, it could be a sensible explanation, say a mad women or something.
Third, she is a time traveler or a space alien, talking to the mother ship. Did the star ship Enterprise ever go back to Earth of the 1920s?
