Jessica Martin is the author of “The Christian Lady’s Dating Constitution: A Memorandum Addressed to Christian Teens, Parents, and Young Adults” which was published in December 2009 by Holy Fire Publishing. The 140 page paperback, ISBN: 978-1-603-83283-0, is a book with Christian dating advice for ladies seeking healthy dating relationships. Its pages are filled with God’s Word, practical solutions, and reality-based Christian dating advice.
Why Write the Book?
Martin was trying to find a book, for a friend, about God’s view on healthy dating relationships. At her local library, there were a couple of Christian books with one or two chapters devoted to relationships. Also, Martin found a few Christian books that emphasized abstinence and purity. She felt compelled to write a book on how to identify healthy and unhealthy dating relationships. The book contains simple and powerful tools to empower and educate ladies about healthy relationships.
The Christian Lady’s Dating Constitution takes a different approach that is formatted in an outline of a constitution containing a Bill of Rights. At its core, there are biblical principles, with God’s Word, that delves into areas geared to helping Christian ladies make healthy dating choices. Although the book is written for Christian pre-teens and teens, the author believes that Christian men, women, and groups could benefit from her book.
Throughout the book there are scriptures supporting the Bill of Rights and straight-forward Christian dating advice. The author gives a personal account of her unhealthy relationship with her “Christian” ex-boyfriend to further enhance the book’s message.
Inside the Book
The introduction sets the foundation for understanding that Christian ladies can be fooled by church attendance, ministry affiliation with impressive credentials, and the appearance godliness. These seemingly “godly” outward appearances are not the fruits of the Spirit or the foundation for sustaining a healthy relationship. A healthy Christian dating relationship demands more than a shallow commitment or the falsehood of godliness.
In chapter three, there is the dating constitution with eight Bill of Rights: you have the right to believe in yourself, be treated with respect, be treated as equal, say no to unwanted physical or sexual advances, to control your own time, the right to express your views, the right to end a relationship, and the right to be “mean” without guilt. The eight Bill of Rights are the basis for a healthy self-esteem and should become daily affirmations.
Chapter five has a, “Scenarios: What Would you Do in This Relationship?”, question and answer section. Scenarios are presented with the opportunity to write in answers to the presented questions. These practical exercises offer an interactive workbook experience for the reader.
The topics of sex and pre-marital sex are discussed in chapter seven and give God’s perspective through His Word. Some areas addressed in the chapter are sex as a tool to get or keep a man, questioning worthiness of being sexually respected until marriage, and the issue of having pre-marital sex although a couple plans to marry. God requires Christians to honor His Word about avoiding adultery and fornication outside of marriage.
Martin’s petitions (or appeals) to teens, parents, educators, and ministers can be found in chapter 13. She urges teens to focus on self-improvement and God. In time, Mr. Right will come along when the time is right. To the parents, Martin urges vigilance and setting the example for their children. Ministers, youth ministers, and volunteers in ministries are challenged to seek training about unhealthy relationships. Educators are encouraged to legislatively get involved to include a dating violence policy for school districts of their states, if one does not exist.
The book offers more than Christian dating advice; it is a manual for teens, parents, educators, ministers and ministries, and those who want to identify and avoid unhealthy dating relationships. Advice on Christian dating is delivered in a no nonsense manner with practical solutions. Today’s ladies need to be armed with sound godly principles and God’s Word to avoid the consequences of unhealthy dating relationships.
