The Daily Tribune reported on October 26, 2010 that the city of Ferndale will be paying the Fire and Police chiefs less money than previous chiefs. Of course they do get to keep a pretty impressive list of benefits. The salary they will get is better than the average American salary and an increase from their previous position so it’s really not so bad. It looks like the police chief Timothy Collins is going to have to give up his $206.00 quarterly cost of living account and Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan has volunteered to drive his personal vehicle to save the cost of the city of Ferndale having to provide him one.
The Daily Tribune reported on July 13, 2010 that the Ferndale court workers union will be accepting a pay freeze and a reduction in benefits. This same article states that non-union workers have already taken a 5 percent pay cut and reduced health and prescription benefits.
The one article I can’t seem to find is the one where it states the cuts that the city council has made; could it be that while they are asking everyone to give up something they have given up nothing? How much money do we pay the mayor of Ferndale and the council members and what benefits do they receive from their position? Do they get a city owned car with an expense account? How much money would the city of Ferndale save if the council members gave up 5% of their pay with a reduction in benefits, most jobs do not supply a company car so why should they get a free ride? Can they hide behind closed doors and vote themselves raises?
Maybe when making cuts in salaries, expenses and benefits instead of starting from the bottom and working their way up they should just start at the top.
