Being a former U. S. Marine no one was more disappointed in hearing that Alan Simpson had questioned whether the veterans and my mentors was doing anything for this nation and its fiscal mess. When I first heard about it, I was quickly moved to anger and was thinking that maybe it was time for Mr. Simpson’s services on the committee to be terminated. The vet comment along with the comment regarding social security had been enough for me. That was until I calmed down enough to see what the possible reason and advantage it was to keep Mr. Simpson exactly where he was.
My thoughts are as follows; Mr. Simpson’s excuses for thinking its time to address social security by cutting it or veterans benefits by trying to eliminate some of them can be quite useful in several different ways. The first being it is the saddest excuse that many of us had ever heard and if it’s the best that the opposition has to offer to tamper with it, and then we all should rest assured that these programs will not be touched. Not only because this president will never sit by and let it happen but because the majority of Americans would not allow this as well. The benefit of having an attitude and reasoning on the committee like Alan Simpson’s demonstrates to all who care to listen, just how detached the opposition is from what is just and right by those he was chosen to serve.
Another benefit to having Mr. Simpson stay just where he is, it allows for that decent which is sorely needed in any debate. When you have a group of people thinking, feeling and re-acting the same way, you can never get a real sense of the possible outcomes of any decision. The best decisions are made when you are able to hear all sides of an argument. It allows you the opportunity to weight the possible solutions and provides an avenue to a more educated outcome.
Democrats should stop trying to micro-manage this president’s decision about those he hires and start doing that which he has asked us to do so many times. He requires us to keep his feet to the fire but I do not think he means for us to do this by questioning his every move but by coming up with our own solutions and making them known to him. I think he meant for us to not become as those we condemn but stay inclusive and embrace those who think differently than we do. I think he wants us to keep reminding him of the promises that he made on the campaign trail but stop looking for him to give us everything that we want from anything that he does. This country is not all about democrats, liberals, progressives or whatever we wished to be called at any given time. This nation is made up of millions of people all different with different likes and dislikes. He is, after all, the president for all America and just not for your America.
