” I love this time of year.” Marcy said to her dog as they were coming down the stairs to the front doors. She noticed the moving van out front.” Hey Punkie we might be getting neighbors.” It sure seemed that way, men were unloading boxes and furniture and taking things up in the freight elevator. There was only 1 vacant apartment in the whole building that she knew of and for some reason people never stayed there long.
Later that day while she was checking the mail, Marcy got to see the new tenants,an older man, his wife and their son.Being polite she introduced herself.” Hi I’m Marcy, I live in 420 welcome to the buidling.”The newcomers simply looked at her and replied in stuffy tones ” Thank you.” then turned away and went up the stairs to the 2nd floor where their apt was loated. “Well that was kinda rude.” she thought to herself.Deciding to not dwell on it Marcy went on back to her place to get ready for her job as a night nurse at the local hospital.
That night was the busiest she could remember it ever being at work. The very first patients who came in were the 2 men who had been moving the new people into her apt buidling. They were both being treated for some sort of strange rash.As she took down their names and symptoms she noticed what looked like a couple of small puncture holes in the neck of 1 of them.”Wonder where they came from?” she thought as she carefully washed the wounds off with antiseptic.
The next day Marcy was once again out walking her dog Punkie when she noticed the youngest of her new neighbors watching her from the shade of the porch.Waving hello she went on with her walk. When she returned later he was still there, still watching her. “Hmmm he looks like he could use a day at the beach.” Marcy mused. As she passed him to go into the atrium the boy spoke” May I walk with you up the stairs?”he inquired. “Sure I guess.” she answered. “You are lucky to work at night.” the boy remarked Marcy laughed. “Why do you say that?” “You just are lucky.”he repeated. When they reached the 2nd floor he said good-bye and went to his apartment. Marcy thought nothing more of the conversation as she continued up to her apartment.
The rest of the month she didn’t see any of them. However at the hospital she began to see more and more people she knew from her building, all of them with 2 tiny holes in their necks. “Vampires?” she wondered “No way vampires only exist in fiction…..right?”
When at last she saw the boy again she didn’t hesitate to ask”What did you mean when you said I was lucky to work at night?” He couldnt meet her eyes, “My family and I are vampires we have been living on the blood of your neighbors.” His eyes seemed to turn red in an instant ” But you are the only one left and I am still hungry.” Her scream faded as her lunged in and drained her blood. “Here Punkie.” he called “Come here Punkie thats a good boy.” Punkies eyes glowed red as well, for hidden beneath his fur were a series of tiny puncture marks.
