The Event May be THE Event of the Fall
We have all seen the commercials for months. Our interest has been thoroughly peaked. The only real question in our minds is this: What is The Event?
Put simply, The Event is yet another mystery drama put on television to keep us viewers glued to our television sets week in and week out. The more questions that get answered, the more that come up. Does any of this sound familiar? It should. This has been one of the staples of prime time television for years, especially after the explosion of ABC’s hit series LOST.
What sets The Event apart from the rest of the ‘always wonder yet never answer’ pack? Honestly, not much from what has been seen, but the glimmer of hope for NBC (and its shareholders), is the fact that it actually looks like The Event may actually go somewhere. Unlike mystery dramas of recent years – The Nine and Jericho among them – the writing seems to focus on moving the story forward, as opposed to holding it hostage for as long as possible.
The core story behind The Event follows Sean Walker, a man who is investigating the disappearance of his girlfriend from a ritzy, beach resort hotel. In his quest to find his missing love, Sean Walker manages to uncover the largest, most mankind altering, conspiracy to ever be uncovered. Along the way some key players, like President Elias Martinez, get involved in the discovery… And may also lose their lives.
Another shiny spot for NBC and The Event producers may lie in Nick Wauters. Nick Wauters is the creator, and a writer, for the Event. The reason he may be a bright spot here is the fact that his track record is fairly short, but very strong; with the most notable points of his resume including writing and producing stints on shows such as SyFy Channel’s The 4400 and Eureka, as well as the show Neaurotica. The hope is that a man who has some experience, but has not been mainstream marketed yet, can bring a fresh take to an old formula.
Another key element that may set The Event apart from the rest of the crowd is the alien aspect. Well, actually the alien invasion aspect, to be more precise. According to NY Mag’s website, The Event is one of a ‘ridiculous number’ of alien invasion projects hitting both the big and small screens all across America.
