In the beginning of “The Event” Season 1 Episode 3 “Protect them from the Truth,” Sean is dragging Special Agent Collier, who has been injured, into a motel room. Sean starts to treat the wounds.
Two hours before, Collier, Hobbes, and Sean were in a car crash that killed Hobbes and injured Collier. Collier eventually wakes up handcuffed to the bed. Collier warns Sean that she is adding kidnapping a federal agent to the murder rap. Sean wants to find out who Vickie, who is holding his girl friend Leila, is. He has an idea of accessing the FBI’s facial recognition software, but apparently this can only be done via an Intranet at the FBI’s Yuma office. While Sean is in the bathroom, Collier manages to get her cell phone and call for help.
President Martinez surveys the crash site with all of the dead bodies. He is now more determined than ever to get to the truth. But even showing a picture of the bodies to Sophie, leader of the presumed alien detainees, does not move her to reveal whom her fellow aliens are who have infiltrated human society. But another alien, named William, seems ready to talk. His demand is protection, money, and his girlfriend Maya. These demands are acceded to.
In the meantime, an FBI team forcibly enters the hotel room, though Sean escapes out the back window. Collier is wondering if Sean was telling the truth after all. She sees a report on TV saying that the airliner crashed in Brazil and remembers that Sean had told her that the crash happened in Arizona four hours before.
Sean, in the meantime, breaks into the server closet at the FBI office in Yuma, hooks up Collier’s laptop, and runs the facial recognition program against Vickie’s face. He gets caught in the end, but not before Vickie gets several hits on some aliases. Collier takes note of this bit of information too.
William and Maya are reunited at a government safe house. William tells Maya what he intends to do, whereupon, with considerable regret, Maya stabs William to death to keep him silent.
Vickie is obliged to murder a police officer who stops her on the road while transporting Leila. Later, Leila in thrown into a shipping container and Vickie comes close to killing her twice, though her fellow conspirators stop her.
At FBI headquarters, two “federal marshals” arrive to pick up Sean. Collier suspects they are not who they say they are and, after an altercation, she and Sean flee in a black SUV.
Finally, in a temporary morgue, the passengers of the crashed airliner, without a fuss, begin to come back to life.
