In “The Event” Season 1 Episode 4 “A Matter of Life or Death,” Sean and Agent Collier are on the run in a stolen black SUV, now on the hunt for Vicki and, hence, Sean’s beloved Leigh. They are meanwhile hunted by well-armed people.
Spoilers surely follow.
Vicki and Carter take Leigh to a new safe house and toss her into a basement, with her hands still tied, a bucket for her bodily functions, and with assurances that she will soon be freed unharmed to live out her life. However, Leigh shortly overhears the two discussing her imminent demise. Leigh starts working frantically to cut her bonds.
There is a flashback from five years earlier when Sean and Leigh first had a Thanksgiving dinner with her parents. Here we learn that Sean’s parents had split and his mom had “mental issues.”
Meanwhile, back at the White House, President Martinez is quite put out that Sophia is not being forthcoming about the whole airplane incident. The previously dead passengers and crew are more than a little uncertain about how they got to Arizona. The last thing they remember is taking off from Miami.
A person named Thomas calls Martinez, informing him that he teleported the plane. His demands are to free Sophia and the detainees, or he will start getting really rough with entire communities. After revealing that he knows she had William killed, Sophia breaks down and informs him that she knows who is calling him with threats. She begs the President to give Thomas what she wants.
Sean and Agent Collier, using Vicki’s credit card records, track down Vicki’s mother, Laura. They find out that Vicki’s son is also there. They threaten to call child protective services and in return get an emergency contact number for Vicki.
In the meantime, Vicki goes down to the basement to finish off Leigh. Instead Leigh breaks free, knocks Vicki down, takes her gun, and runs. In the process of the escape, Leigh apparently shoots Vicki and then gets away. Leigh eventually flags down a police car and is taken to the station. She calls Sean’s cell phone to tell him she is alright and where she is. She gets his voice mail, however.
Of course it turns out that the escape was all stage managed. Vicki and Carter have killed all the police officers at the station and have their own operatives pretending to be police. They surmise that Sean will, sooner or later, get the message and then come to Leigh whereupon they will kill him.
Now, in conclusion, how many conspiracies do we have here? There is the Sophia conspiracy, the Thomas Conspiracy, and the Vicki conspiracy. There also may be an inside the White House conspiracy. Even The X Files only had one.
